As a result, the club has had numerous nicknames throughout its history. Some of them denominated by the club, and some prescribed for different reasons.
Here’s a list of Club América’s many nicknames and a breakdown of their origin and meaning:
“The Students” / ”Los Estudiantes” - Early in the club’s history, the team were referred to as the students by their rivals. Since they were founded by a merging of two colleges, Colegio Mascarones and Colegio Marista de la Perpetua, many of their players were, in fact, college students. The nickname maintained relevance for some years because the club typically fielded a young team.
“The Blue-Creams” / ”Creams” / ”Las Cremas” -One of the oldest and most distinctive nicknames for the club, they were often called the “creams” due to the fact that their original colors actually included a whiter shade of yellow cream before being replaced by a more vibrant electric yellow in the 1980s.
“Canaries” / “Canarios” - Perhaps obvious, the team are called canaries due to the prominence of yellow in their kit, a nickname they share with Norwich City FC in England.
“Eagles” / “Eagles of America” / “Aguilas del America” - The club has been owned by media company Grupo Televisa since 1959. When new club president, Emilio Díez Barroso, arrived in the early 80s, he devised a marketing campaign, which would involve a popular animal that represented pride and domination. They came up with the eagles. This nickname remains popular to this day.
